ABOUT TANJORE PAINTINGS
Tanjore paintings are classical south Indian painting style, that originated from Tanjore in Tamil Nadu back in the 17th century. These paintings are characterized by their rich and vivid colors, simple iconic composition, glittering gold foils overlaid on delicate but extensive gesso work and inlay of glass beads and pieces or very rarely precious and semi-precious gems. They essentially symbolize ancient themes of traditional gods and goddesses.
DESCRIPTION
Markandeya’s lore is famous for its manifestation of immortality. Predestined to live only for 16 years, Markandeya was an ardent worshipper of Lord Shiva. Towards the completion of his 16th year, Yamaraja, the god of death approached Markandeya, who was deep in prayer to Lord Shiva. Depicted here on his mount, the black buffalo, Yamaraja is shown with his characteristic whip wound around Markandeya and the Shiva Linga together, as a symbol of Markandeya’s devotion making him inseparable from the Lord. Shown levitating in the painting, Lord Shiva assassinates the god of death with his trident, Trishula, to prevent him from taking Markandeya’s life.
