ABOUT TANJORE PAINTINGS
Tanjore paintings are classical South Indian painting styles, that originated from Tanjore in Tamil Nadu back in the 17th century. These paintings are characterized by their rich and vivid colors, simple iconic composition, glittering gold foils overlaid on delicate but extensive gesso work, and inlay of glass beads and pieces or very rarely precious and semi-precious gems. They essentially symbolize ancient themes of traditional gods and goddesses.
DESCRIPTION
Narasimha, an incarnation of Vishnu, is married to Lakshmi and is thus known as Lakshmi Narasimha. He is depicted with a man's body and a lion's face and claws, and famously is seen destroying Hiranyakashipu, the incredibly powerful brother of the previously slain Hiranyaksha. This demonic being was granted unrivaled protection, meaning he was invulnerable to any god, demon, person, or animal during nighttime or day, and both indoors and outdoors. Vishnu, recognizing the power of the man-demon, created an avatar which was neither animal nor man and slew Hiranyakashipu at twilight, circumventing the conditions of immunity.
