ABOUT TANJORE PAINTINGS
Tanjore paintings are classical south Indian painting style, that originated from Tanjore in Tamil Nadu back in the 17th century. These paintings are characterized by their rich and vivid colors, simple iconic composition, glittering gold foils overlaid on delicate but extensive gesso work and inlay of glass beads and pieces or very rarely precious and semi-precious gems. They essentially symbolize ancient themes of traditional gods and goddesses.
DESCRIPTION
Tanjore Painting of Panchmukhi Ganesh is a representation of Lord Ganesh with five faces. “Panch” literally means “Five” and “Mukhi” means “Faced”. Each of the faces of Panchamukhi Ganesha faces a different direction and hence the name. Panchamugha Ganesha is regarded as an embodiment of all potencies
In this particular painting, the artist has focused on Lord Ganesha, the God of new beginnings and remover of obstacles. He has been shown sitting on his throne surrounded by a mouse (his followers) and Modals( his favourite food). He has been shown having 5 heads and hands to show his powers. Around the painting we see extensively done ghetto work with gold foil laid on it, which is adding onto the painting.
