DESCRIPTION
Kartikeya, known as Skanda, Subrahmanya, and Murugan, is the Hindu god of war. He is the son of Parvati and Shiva, and the brother of Ganesha. His legends have numerous versions in Hinduism and he has been a significant deity in the Indian subcontinent since ancient times. He is worshipped as Mahasena and Kumara in North India, and is highly revered in the state of Tamil Nadu and other parts of South India, as well as Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Malaysia as Murugan, often considered the "God of the Tamil people". It is believed that the Tamil deity of Murugan merged with the Vedic deity of Subrahmanya during the Sangam era. Both Muruga and Subrahmanya are names for Kartikeya.
