DESCRIPTION
This magnificent Tanjore Painting showcases Dharmasastha alongside the divine figures of Poorna and Pushkala. It is adorned with 22 carat gold leaves. Widely worshipped throughout Tamil Nadu, Lord Sastha is the son of Lord Vishnu (in the form of Mohini) and Lord Shiva, and is often depicted as being married to both Poorna and Pushkala. Ayyappa or Mani Kanda, an incarnation of Lord Sastha, was a Nithya Brahmachari and the adopted son of the Pandya king of Pandalam. However, in the Arayankav temple of Kerala, it is believed that he wedded Pushkala Devi of the Saurashtrian community, and he and his wives Poorna and Pushkala are revered in the Achal Kovil temple of Kerala.
