ABOUT TANJORE PAINTINGS
Tanjore paintings are classical south Indian painting style, that originated from Tanjore in Tamil Nadu back in the 17th century. These paintings are characterized by their rich and vivid colors, simple iconic composition, glittering gold foils overlaid on delicate but extensive gesso work and inlay of glass beads and pieces or very rarely precious and semi-precious gems. They essentially symbolize ancient themes of traditional gods and goddesses.
DESCRIPTION
Kartikeya also known as Skanda,Subrahmanya, Shanmukha Ṣaṇmukha), and Murugan, is the Hindu god of war.He is the son of Parvati and Shiva, the brother of Ganesha and a god whose legends have many versions in Hinduism.Kartikeya has been an important deity in the Indian subcontinent since ancient times, worshipped as Mahasena and Kumara in North India and is predominantly worshipped in the state of Tamil Nadu and other parts of South India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Malaysia as Murugan.
Murugan is widely regarded as the "God of the Tamil people". It has been postulated that the Tamil deity of Murugan was syncretised with the Vedic deity of Subrahmanya following the Sangam era. Both Muruga and Subrahmanya refer to Kartikeya.
