ABOUT LOST WAX BRONZE SCULPTURES

The Lost Wax Process or cire-perdue is a centuries-old approach to metal casting involving the use of hot metal poured into a wax model, which is destroyed in the process. Commonly used to create intricate bronze sculptures, early iterations were primarily made of copper, but bronze soon dominated for its enhanced strength and tensile properties. Creating the sculpture starts with a wax model, then a clay mould is wrapped around it to harden the clay. The wax is heated to melt off and the metal is poured into the resulting negative space. Once cooled, the clay is broken away to leave the finished bronze figure. Distinctive and special, these sculptures take weeks to months to produce, as each one is otherwise impossible to replicate.
