DESCRIPTION

Kartikeya, known as Skanda, Subrahmanya, Shanmukha Ṣaṇmukha, and Murugan, is the Hindu god of war, son of Shiva and Parvati, and brother of Ganesha. He has been venerated in the Indian subcontinent since ancient times and is worshipped as Mahasena and Kumara in North India, and predominantly in Tamil Nadu and South India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Malaysia as Murugan—the "God of the Tamil people." The syncretism of Muruga and Subrahmanya, postulated to have occurred in the Sangam Era, has resulted in both terms referring to Kartikeya.
